"Pop Culture in the 1950's"

1. What media exploded in the 1950's, and how did business respond to this explosion? The television had developed with lightning speed. It had reached 9% by 1950 and 55% by 1954. American businesses took advantage of the opportunity.


2. Why did critics not like television? They believed it was an effect on children and that it was stereotypical portrayal of women and their

minorities.


3. Whats so ironic about rock and roll music in the 1950's? It was made by African Americans but it was consumed by Whites and people hated it because they believed it would lead to pregnancy and people killing eachother.

"The American Dream 1950's"

1. What were some causes for the baby boom? Soldiers returning home from war and deciding to settle down and have a family. From 1940 to 1960 there was a infant born every 7 seconds.


2. What did Americans have to do in order to support all the new babies being born? Immediately think about putting thier kids in school. They would have a tremendous impact on their childs care.


3. How did the roles of women change in the 1950's? Their role of being a stay at home wife they were starting to be glorified in magazines and movies and even tv shows. For the first time in their lives women were becoming aware of the identity crisis they were going through.


4. What changes allowed the American car explosion to occur? When the U.S Govenrment rationed gasoline and tried to save gasoline supplies. Easy credit terms and extensive advertising persuaded Americans to buy cars in record numbers.

"Truman's Labor Policies"

1. What were some of the siginficant challenges President Truman faced after WWII? Making sure everyone who was in the war returned to their families healthy, safe and secured. He believed that the people should be fairly treated and given the best of what he had.


2  How did Truman try to help returning GI soldiers get jobs after WWII? And how was he effective?

1. How did the lives of teenagers change after the TGD and WWII? They were beginning to be thought of as unique and important. After the war it became possible for them to stay in school instead of working. And it allowed them to get allowances.


2. What is white flight? Was it good for society? It is an economic resource that isloated people from other races and classes. I think it was good for society because nearly 5 million African American moved from the rural south to Urban Areas.

3. Why did mexican immigrate to the U.S before the 1950's? Because alot of the mexicans were allowed to enter the United States to harvest crops. And alot of exicans entered the U.S illegally to escape poor conditions in Mexico.

1. Bruno moved with his family so his father could be closer to the Nazi death camps. At first only father knew the real reason for moving to the country. Why do you think father was so secretive about why the family moved? Because he knew they wouldnt want to move. And that it woud be hard to get them to leave.


2. Bruno was taught to think of jews in a certain way. what was Bruno taught about jews? To appreciate them and believe in what they believed in.


3. When Bruno fell from the swing a jewish man helped him. Why was this event significant to Bruno's mother of jewish people? She believed that jewish people were bad and were worth nothing.


4. Bruno's father evolved from a loving father to a what? why? Because he became the Main man and he wanted to show that he could stay in charge. So he could chnge his ways.


5. Bruno evolved and transformed as well. What kind of boy was he at first, and what did he transform to? He was a boy who was loving, careful, wasnt really out there exploring the world. He kept all his thoughts to his self. Then he became a boy who realized what the world really was and wanted to help people and see what other's lives were about.


6. Describe your feelings about Bruno's actions. Include descriptions of the scene and the choices Bruno made and what difference his actions made? I think Bruno did a good thing when he became friends with that boy from the Death camp. He wanted to become his friend and look after him he wanted to somewhat see what it was like to be in his shoes which is why he kept going back. Bruno wanted to really know what it was like to be inside the death camp and it eventually caused him his life.

"End of WWII"

1. Was General MaArthur a successful general? Explain with evidence. I think he was because he successfully led the allied troops in battles on the islands Bataan, Leyte and Iwo Jima.


2. Explain how successful the G.I Bill was to returning to soldiers? Well first off the event provided education and training for veterans. Which was paid for by the Federal Government- giving soldiers a free college education.


3. Why were Mexicans in L.A. unfairly treated after the war? Because prejudice was just being explored and experienced Los Angeles exploded in anti Mexican Zoot Suit Roots. This charge triggered violenc

e involving thousands of servicemen and civilians.
